A symposium entitled "Spatial development in Europe - The Austrian view" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 22 November 1996. The symposium is organized by the Austrian Institute for Regional Studies and Spatial Planning on behalf of the Austrian Federal Chancellery.

The aim of the event is to establish dialogue between officials of the European Commission, Austria and the other Member States. Spatial planning is of particular interest to Austria given its position as a link between the EU and Central and Eastern European countries, and as an Alpine state.

Sessions at the symposium, which will have participation from both DG XI (environment) and DG XVI (regional policy) of the European Commission, will address these two special interests. In addition, three parallel workshops will focus on sustainable spatial development, networking and competition between cities and European transport policy in Central Europe.
