The "European Congress on the Ethics of Animal Experimentation" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 17 and 18 December 1996. The Congress is organized by the European Biomedical Research Association and the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations, with the support of DG XII of the European Commission.

The aim of the congress is to stimulate discussion and cooperation on the ethics of animal research between scientists, philosophers and welfarists. The congress should provide areas of common ground between participants, with the hope of building broader agreement amongst all the main interest groups.

The major topics to be covered are:

- Animal research and animal protection - The classical debate;
- The regulation of animal experimentation in Europe and beyond;
- Animal biotechnology;
- Replacement alternatives and regulatory toxicology;
- Refinement of animal experiments;
- The use of primates in experiments;
- Public understanding of animal research.
