An Indo-European seminar on "Clean Coal Technology and Power Plant Upgrading" will be held in New Delhi, India, on 14-16 January 1997. The seminar, which is supported by the Community's JOULE/THERMIE programme for RTD in the field of non-nuclear energy, is being organized by VGB, Essen (Germany) and NTPC, New Delhi (India), in collaboration with BEO - Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH and KEMA Nederland B.V.

The European experiences concerning technical and economic aspects of clean coal advanced cycle technologies, as well as various renovation and life extension measures, will be presented to high-level representatives from authorities, utilities and interested industry in India.

A targeted audience consisting of about 150 senior power plant experts from India and 25 delegates from Europe are expected to attend this three-day seminar.

The subject areas to be covered include:

- Clean Coal Technologies:
. Coal homogenization (e.g. coal beneficiation, coal preparation to reduce ash content, coal blending);
. Environmental technology (e.g. atmospheric/circulating fluidized bed combustion, pressurized fluidized bed combustion with combined cycle operation, primary technologies for NOx reduction at the combustion stage, flue gas desulphurisation, flue gas denitrification, improvements in dedusting);
. Ash disposal and utilization (e.g. dry ash disposal, treatment and disposal of sludge from FGD plants, circulating fluidized bed boilers, coal gasifiers etc.);
. Use of ash and residues in roads, buildings, construction materials and to produce usable by-products;

- Thermal Power Plant Upgrading:
. Renovation/lifetime extension (e.g. reduction in auxiliary power consumption to improve efficiency);
. Advanced coal-fired power plant technology (e.g. ultra high steam temperatures, ultra super critical cycles, more efficient cycles, mixed fluid cycles etc.).
