An international symposium on occupational health and safety in small-scale enterprises, "From Protection to Promotion", will take place in Helsinki, Finland, on 4-6 May 1998. The symposium is being organized by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in Finland.

The aim of the symposium is to share the most recent information and knowledge on occupational health and safety in small-scale enterprises, to chart the problems in the field, and to find solutions which could be applied as models and recommendations for small-scale enterprises in various countries.

The symposium is intended for experts and researchers in occupational health and safety administration. The main themes to be covered include:

- The present situation: inventory of ongoing activities as well as of problems and solutions;
- Innovative proposals concerning occupational health and safety in small-scale enterprises;
- Challenges for the future.

The European Commission (DG V - Employment, industrial relations and social affairs) is represented on the international advisory committee of the symposium.
