Preparing Europe for the Information Society
The aim of the conference is to raise awareness of the challenges of the multilingual Information Society and stimulate a debate on how best to prepare European citizens for living and working in the multilingual information age. Key issues to be discussed will include social cohesion, quality of life and the competitiveness of European business. The issue of how to stimulate the uptake of existing multilingual applications and services, and define the need for new ones, will also be addressed.
The MLIS programme Information Day will take place in the afternoon, following the conclusion of the conference. The Commission officials responsible for the management of the programme will present each of the areas of activity and then answer questions. The three main action lines of the MLIS programme are:
- Supporting the creation of a framework of services for European language resources;
- Encouraging the use of language technologies, resources and standards;
- Promoting the use of advanced language tools in the Community and Member States' administrations.
