Tropospheric ozone pollution in southern Europe
The aim of the workshop is to undertake a review of current understanding and an exchange of experience on photochemical ozone formation in southern Europe. It is hoped that this may assist the European Commission in the preparation of legislative proposals for a future European Directive on ozone pollution.
It is also intended to share experiences in ozone episode management, as well as to increase awareness of the cost-effectiveness of future strategies designed to reduce precursors in southern Europe.
The workshop is aimed at scientists and experts involved in air pollution management, at local, national and EU level, and currently working on topics relating to photochemical pollution. The main topics to be covered will include:
- Phenomenology of ozone in southern Europe and conditions that lead to ozone episodes;
- Effects of ozone on human health and vegetation, including recommendations for limit values, alert thresholds for ozone and target values;
- Measurement and assessment techniques for ozone;
- Abatement strategies.
