A series of training courses to promote "best practices" and transfer knowledge in the field of water measurements is being organized within the framework of a project financed by the Community's Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) research programme. A total of five courses will be held in 1997 and 1998, in Finland, Greece and Italy.

The planned dates and locations of the training courses are as follows:

- Occurrence of heavy metals and ions, and monitoring of physio-chemical parameters in drinking water and surface water: 5-9 May 1997, Ioannina, Greece;

- Monitoring and measurements of lake recipients: 25-29 August 1997, Helsinki, Finland;

- Biological agents in fresh water and drinking water: 10-14 November 1997, Genoa, Italy;

- Use of Biotic index to evaluate the quality of freshwater streams: May 1998, Genoa, Italy;

- Occurrence of organic compounds in drinking and surface water: September 1998, Ioannina, Greece.

The courses aim to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge between different European countries, with particular emphasis on experiences in the less-favoured regions. Discussions will focus on potential solutions to problems related to water quality (e.g. surface water and groundwater monitoring control of water purifying techniques, standardization, etc.).
