An EU workshop on the management of bathing water quality will be held from 26-30 April 1997. The aim of the workshop, which is supported by the Community's Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) programme, is to investigate the technical feasibility of "a priori" measurements as predictors of the quality and safety of recreational water.

Directive 76/160/EEC relating to the quality of bathing water has led to considerable improvements in the quality of recreational water. It has been proposed to further reduce the allowable levels of indicator organisms but concerns have been expressed at to the costs of these modifications in comparison to the increased ill health that could be expected.

Many scientists involved in this field are concerned about the great variations and discrepancies in the results obtained in measuring indicator organisms which may hamper a continuous risk assessment. The workshop aims to discuss a multidisciplinary perspective for an "a priori" measurement approach in bathing water monitoring, taking into account the political requirements at the European level for a framework Directive on water quality.

Participation in the workshop will be limited. Participants will include 30 invited experts representing all Member States, a number of experts with particularly relevant experience from outside the European Union and representatives of the European Commission (DG XII and DG XI). Proceedings will be available after the workshop.
