European Cohesion Forum
The promotion of economic and social cohesion is one of the European Union's three major priorities, alongside the achievement of economic and monetary union and the completion of the Single Market. As part of the ongoing dialogue with those concerned with European cohesion policies, the Forum is intended:
- To examine the achievements of the cohesion policies of the EU and to assess the contribution of other policies of the EU and the Member States in this process;
- To consider how they might be improved in the years ahead in order to meet new challenges;
- To assess the added-value of the implementation of EU cohesion policies.
The 1,200 persons who have been invited to participate in the "European Cohesion Forum" represent all the sectors involved in regional and social development policies, including: the European Institutions, regional and local authorities, economic operators and social partners, research institutes, and other groups. In order to guarantee the bottom-up approach of the Forum, more than half of the participants will be from the regional and local authorities.
Participation is the Forum will be restricted to those directly involved in the implementation of cohesion policies. There will, however, be an opportunity for all those interested in this issue to contribute to the debate through an online discussion group created by the European Commission. This facility will be available by the end of February 1997.
