The first Euroconference on environmental analytical chemistry will be held in Neusiedl am See, Austria, from 11 to 17 October 1997. The event is organized by the Institute of Analytical Chemistry in Vienna and the Institute of Reference Materials and Measurements of the Joint Research Centre.

The theme of the conference is "Europe's environment - Challenges for analytical chemistry". It will discuss the state of the environment in Europe and identify urgent needs for research in analytical chemistry to tackle these problems. Although the programme will include invited lectures from internationally renowned scientists, a significant proportion will be given over to young researchers. Presentations from young scientists are likely to focus on the development of analytical methods and procedures for environmental assessment. It is expected that participants will, in general, prepare papers for presentation.

In order to encourage the participation of young researchers, and those from less-favoured regions, a number of grants are available to support accommodation and travel costs. These grants are made available through the Euroconferences activity of the Community's specific programme in the field of Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR).
