A conference entitled "Culture or economy - the Information Society in Europe" will be held in Cologne, Germany, on 28 February 1997. The conference, which addresses a range of issues in the development of the Information Society in Europe, is being organized by ARD Westdeutscher Rundfunk and is sponsored by the European Commission.

The conference will be addressed by Mr. Martin Bangemann, European Commissioner responsible for industry and telecommunications, who will give the keynote speech on the Information Society in Europe. A panel of experts of the Community's Information Society Forum will address a number of specific issues.

The afternoon session will feature a moderated discussion, which will be broadcast live on television, radio and Internet. This discussion will be attended by Mr. Bangemann and by representatives from the German government, including Mr. J�rgen R�ttgers, Minister for Education, Science, Research and Technology, and Mr. Wolfgang Clement, Minister for Economy and SMEs, Technology and Transport.
