Occupational intakes of radionuclides
The aim of the ERPET initiative is to stimulate education and training activities in radiation protection in order to maintain and extend Community expertise in radiation protection. The objective of this particular training course is to provide an overview of methods used for the assessment of doses from occupational intakes of radionuclides and information on recent and current developments in internal dosimetry. Particular attention will be given to the work of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). Hands-on training will be provided in methods of assessing intakes and resulting doses, including the use of recently developed PC software.
The course is aimed at those whose work involves, in some way, the assessment of doses resulting from occupational intakes of radionuclides, and who wish to be brought up to date with the latest developments in the field. The course will be limited to 40 students. Lecturers will be European experts in the various subject areas.
The topics to be covered by the course include:
- Biological basis for intake via inhalation, ingestion, wounds;
- Mathematical models for systematic retention and excretion;
- Development of computer models with exercises by students;
- Kinetic models based on the new ICRP lung model;
- Dosimetry and dose distribution in tissues and organs and calculation of organ and effective dose;
- Exercises involving computer programmes;
- Air sampling, including the theory of static and personal air samplers, particle sizing and chemistry;
- Individual monitoring for main fission and activation products, actinides and some natural emitters;
- Studies of actual intakes cases;
- Design of monitoring procedures to detect incidents and trigger excretion and in vivo monitoring;
- Practical and theoretical problems in assessing intakes.
