From the lab to the market - Vaccine and cytokine development
The EU Advanced Course will describe the life history of a biotechnological product in the field of immunology, from the initial scientific research and discovery, through all the development steps required in order to make it available to the general public. The theme will be developed by following two real cases of successful products which are already in clinical use: the recombinant pertussis vaccine, and the therapeutic cytokine alpha interferon.
The course is intended as a special training opportunity in the field of health care for young European scientists and, in particular, for PhD students who wish to obtain the European Doctorate in Biotechnology promoted by the European Association for Higher Education in Biotechnology.
The course also intends to promote a better understanding of the relationships between academic/basic scientific research and the industrial work required for the development and public delivery of biotechnological products in the field of healthcare.
The course schedule will include lectures on:
- The basic scientific problems: disease and relevant clinical aspects, molecular biology, genetic and protein engineering;
- Product development: scaling up and pre-clinical phase;
- Animal models of disease;
- Clinical trials;
- Compliance with health authorities requirements;
- Production;
- Quality control and quality assurance;
- Patent rights, intellectual property;
- Marketing and public information.
