Research for the protection and conservation of European cultural heritage
The aim of the French-German Research Programme for the Conservation of Historical Monuments was to further knowledge on the problems of deterioration and weathering of historical monuments and to investigate the efficiency of both ancient and modern methods of protection and preservation. The principal objective of the conference is to present of the results of the research carried out over the past eight years and to demonstrate how these results can be used in other ongoing projects and further developed in future European-level projects.
This concluding conference, "Historical monuments and the environment - French-German research on stone and glass 1988-1996", will present an overview of research carried out under this bilateral cooperative research programme and examine possibilities for future collaboration in the European context.
In this regard, a special session will present the results of a number of European research projects on the protection and conservation of European cultural heritage. Numerous research activities in this field have been carried out, throughout Europe, under the aegis of the European Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Environment and Climate. Indeed, since 1984, approximately 130 of the leading research centres, universities and SMEs in the EU Member States (as well as in Norway, Switzerland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland) have been undertaking collaborative and international research in this area.
Representatives from the European Commission, as well as coordinators of some of these EC projects, will present the aims and objectives of the European programme and the results of research supported to date.
