Regions and the Information Society

A conference on "Regions and the Information Society - Challenges and Propositions for Sustainable Employment" will be held in Lille, France, on 10-11 April 1997. The event is being hosted and organized by the Nord-Pas de Calais regional authorities in conjunction with the Inter-Regional Information Society Initiative (IRISI) and DG V of the European Commission.
The conference will focus on issues relating to the development of the Information Society and the associated opportunities and risks it poses for both employment and human resource development in the regions. It will address the issues of economic and social development and regional cohesion in the context of the Information Society and focus in particular on the impact of Information and Communications Technologies on work organization, flexible time management, the creation or destruction of jobs, job structuring and on the emergence of new know-how and skills.
The objectives of the conference are threefold:
- To present the results of the research carried out by the IRISI regions for DGV of the European Commission on "Regional Labour Markets and Human Resource Development in the Context of a Global Information Society";
- To present innovative experiences initiated in the domain of employment and labour by European regions committed to the Information Society;
- To facilitate common regional reflections of public initiatives at regional, national and European levels.
The conference is designed to attract those interested in the development of the Information Society and in issues relating to employment, labour markets and human resource development. These include elected representatives, employees, employers, managers, trade-union representatives, representatives of employers' organizations, jobless people and their organizations, excluded people and representatives of organizations fighting against exclusion, people in charge of organizations in the voluntary sector, teachers, representatives of training organizations, academics and researchers, people responsible for employment and labour organizations, representatives of Chambers of Commerce and project leaders in the area of Information Technologies.
