PATLIB'97, the eighth European conference for patent information professionals, will take place in Monaco, on 21-23 May 1997. The conference is being organized by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the Ministry of State of the Principality of Monaco.

The conference will feature a number of parallel activities, including: a public exhibition, public seminars, EPO training courses for users of its online services and CD-ROM products, and the PATLIB'97 Symposium for Patent Information Centres (by invitation only).

The PATLIB'97 exhibition, which is open free of charge to the general public, will feature demonstrations of new products, services, hardware and software by specialists in information technology and with expertise in patent information. Other players in the business of innovation will also be invited to participate. Last year's highly successful exhibition featured more than 30 representatives from patent information providers and other advisory bodies.

The theme of this year's public seminars will be "Innovation Support in Europe". Speakers from organizations dedicated to supporting innovation will lecture on their own specialized subject areas. These will include, among others, representative from the European Commission, the European Patent Office and the EUREKA Secretariat.

In addition, the EPO will be running a number of its popular training courses designed particularly for users (beginners, intermediate, and advanced) of its on-line services and CD-ROM products. Please note that early registration for these courses is essential.

The theme of the PATLIB'97 Symposium for Patent Information Centres is "Patent Information Centres - the Future". Discussion groups will provide a forum for participants to discuss ideas and forward proposals. Invited papers will cover topics such as:

- Exploitation of patent information and intellectual property in Monaco;
- Commercial hardware and software developments;
- Patent information in the US;
- Patent information under the European Community's Fifth Framework Programme.

Contributed papers from the Patent Information Centres will cover new initiatives for the provision of more effective services and provide an exchange of ideas and experiences. Workshops will provide development and training opportunities for patent professionals in the areas of: on-line searching, CD-ROM products and services, and the Internet.
