A conference on "Industrial towns and sustainable development", originally scheduled to take place on 30-31 January 1997, will now take place in Dunkirk, France, on 30 May 1997. The event, which is supported by the Association Inter-Regionale sur la Recherche Europeenne (AIRE), a member of the Innovation Relay Centres Network, had to be postponed due to widespread disruption in rail services.

The aim of the meeting is to exchange information about different practices in the field of development planning in industrial areas in relation to the environment. Practical examples from France and from other European countries will be presented. These examples will either describe overall policies, or address particular aspects of environmental protection, such as water, air, waste, risks, noise, landscape and informing the population of developments.
