A high-level energy conference on "Sustainable energy development for Southern Africa" will take place in Midrand, South Africa, on 4-6 June 1997. The conference is a joint initiative of the European Commission (within the JOULE-THERMIE research and demonstration programme in the field of non-nuclear energy) and the Dutch government.

The main objective of the conference will be to establish structures for practical cooperation between Europe and South Africa. In particular in the fields of energy efficiency in industry, renewable energy sources and clean coal applications.

A one-day high-level political conference will focus on discussions on a possible structure for cooperation, culminating in the definition of a concrete strategy. Days two and three of the conference will consist of three parallel workshops, addressing each of the three fields mentioned above, aimed at defining practical arrangements for cooperation in each field.

The conference is being organized, at the request of the European Commission, by a European consortium consisting of NOVEM (Dutch Agency for Energy and the Environment), ETSU (Energy Technology Support Unit (UK)) and EAB (Energie-Anlagen-Berlin (Germany)). The consortium will be assisted, in South Africa, by the Energy Research Institute of the University of Cape Town.
