A conference on "Craft and small enterprises in the Mediterranean region" is being held in Marseilles, France, from 15 to 17 May 1997. The conference is organized by the French "Assemblée Permanente des Chambres de Metiers", with the support of the European Commission in the framework of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation.

The aim of the conference is to build on the existing links and common experiences of craft and small enterprises from all countries in the Euro-Mediterranean region. In particular, the conference should allow the transfer of working practices and processes to enterprises from the south and east of the Mediterranean.

The conference will focus on three separate workshops covering the following topics:

- The legal and administrative environment;
- Training and qualifications;
- Economic development and employment growth.

In addition to these workshops and the opening plenary session, there will be opportunities for participants to meet and discuss possible cooperation. There will also be an exhibition area where participants can display their products and services.
