The eighth European Congress on Biotechnology (ECB8) will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 17 to 21 August 1997. The congress, which is being organized by the European Federation of Biotechnology, will provide an overview of the latest developments and future prospects in the rapidly developing field of biotechnology.

The scientific programme of ECB8 will present the entire spectrum of issues relating to biotechnology. In particular, obstacles to innovation in the scientific, educational and economic fields will be identified and discussed. In addition to plenary lectures, workshops and a wide range of symposia, the conference programme will include two short courses covering:

- Bioreactor performance: the procurement/analysis of fermentation data;
- Biosafety in the workplace.

Within the context of the ECB8, the European Commission will be organizing two half-day symposia on:

- How EC research programmes contribute to biotechnology in Europe;
- How EC research programmes affect society.

The European Commission will also have a stand where information and documentation on each of the three life sciences programmes (BIOMED, BIOTECH and FAIR) can be obtained.
