A European conference on "Road Infrastructure and Safety Research" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 5-7 May 1997. The conference is being organized by the European Commission, in collaboration with the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) and the Forum of European Road Safety Institutes (FERSI).

The purpose of the conference is to bring to the attention of politicians, policy-makers, road operators, local authorities, industrial representatives, as well as of the research sector, the aims and results of projects being carried out within the framework of the Community's specific research programme in the field of Transport and under COST Transport. The conference will also draw attention to the significant link between infrastructure and safety. In addition, it is intended to give attention to the planning of future activities in these research sectors.

The focus will be on the transport policy related research being carried out in the road infrastructure and road safety RTD areas. The European Commission is particularly concerned to see improvements to both the infrastructure system and associated safety areas, which will lead to reduced congestion and increased efficiency, and to improved safety for all road users.

Conference participants will examine the work planned, currently under way, or completed in each of the EC projects being carried out in these sectors. The interaction between safety and infrastructure will be discussed, and the advanced scientific nature and importance of the work carried out will be described.
