The 1997 Open Meeting of the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change Research Community will be held at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria, on 12-14 June 1997.

The meeting is being sponsored by IIASA and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), with co-sponsorship from DG XII (Science, research and development) of the European Commission, the European Science Foundation (ESF), the International Human Dimension programme of Global Environmental Change (IHDP) and the Austrian Ministry for Science and Transport.

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together the growing human dimensions research community in order to promote exchanges of information on current research, teaching and outreach. It also aims to encourage networking in this new field and to attract social scientists, humanists and others not previously involved in human dimensions work. There will be special plenary sessions on leading issues in this field (health, attitudes and behaviour, industrial transformation, business and trade, integrated assessment, environmental governance, environmental security), followed by numerous small group sessions.
