A conference on the "Sustainable management of forests and derivative products in Europe and the rest of the world" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, from 21 to 23 May 1997. The conference is being organized by the Club de Bruxelles, with the support of the European Commission.

The conference will discuss the EU's policies in the area of sustainable forest management, and the prospects for Europe's timber trade in the face of global competition. Eco-certification and labelling of timber products, and enforcement, as well as the UN Conventions on Biodiversity and Climate Change and their impact on forest management will also be discussed. Successive sessions will examine the EU's forestry policies in relation to different areas of the world, including the Central and Eastern European countries and the former Soviet Union, the African, Caribbean and Pacific states, South-East Asia, South America and developing countries.
