A MAST III Advanced Study Course on "The role of methane in the marine environment" will be held in Newcastle, UK, from 7 to 25 July 1997.

The course will focus on a wide variety of topics related to the formation and utilization of methane in the marine environment. It will consist of lectures and seminars, field work (seawater and seabed sampling), a practical programme and industrial visits. The aim is to:

- Introduce post-graduate students to the fundamental natural processes and human activities associated with, or affected by, the formation and utilization of methane in the marine environment;

- Acquaint them with the relevant techniques used by scientists and engineers in academia and industry;

- Enable them to understand the importance and power of interdisciplinary study.
