The first European Conference on Sustainable Island Development will be held in Minorca, Spain, from 23 to 26 April 1997. The conference is organized by UNESCO and the Spanish national, regional and local authorities, with the support of the European Commission.

The conference will be addressed by representatives of island communities in Europe, as well as by organizations representing islands. Representatives of the European Commission will present the Community's initiatives in fields relevant to island development. In particular, they will cover regional policy and the development of the Information Society.

The programme for the conference will be based on three themes:

- Instruments for sustainable island development;
- Technological progress and island societies;
- Cultural heritage and its promotion.
