SOL-GEL'97, the Ninth International Workshop on Glasses, Ceramics, Hybrids and Nanocomposites from Gels, will be held in Sheffield, United Kingdom, from 31 August to 5 September 1997. The workshop is being organized by the Society of Glass Research and the University of Sheffield, with support from the European Community's Industrial and Materials Technologies research programme (BRITE/EURAM).

SOL-GEL, held every two years is the premier conference for the discussion of the latest developments, in the multidisciplinary field, on sol-gel science and technology. With some 300 scientists expected to attend, a major objective of the meeting is to bridge the gap between scientific understanding and industrial application, so that the enormous future potential of sol-gel methods for innovative materials technologies is realised more effectively. Examples will be given, not only for glass and ceramics, but also in the exciting area of organic-inorganic hybrids and nanocomposites derived from gels.
