The 7th training course on "Off-site Emergency Planning and Response to Nuclear Accidents" will take place at the Nuclear Research Centre in Mol, Belgium, from 23 to 27 June 1997. The training course is part of the European Commission's "European Radiation Protection Education and Training" (ERPET) initiative. It is being organized jointly by the European Commission and the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN).

The training course will provide a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of today's emergency planning and response, focusing in particular on the principles of intervention, planning and organization, and decision making with respect to off-site intervention in case of an accidental release of radioactive material to the environment. Specific topics to be covered will include:

- Experience of past accidents;
- Potential accident scenarios;
- Transfer to the environment;
- Exposure pathways;
- Health aspects;
- Accident consequences;
- Remedial actions;
- Intervention criteria;
- Emergency planning reference accidents;
- Real-time assessments;
- Environmental monitoring;
- Decision aiding techniques;
- Public information;
- Organization of emergency plan;
- Emergency response exercises.

The course will be of benefit to those involved in contingency planning, in particular civil protection and environmental protection officers and persons responsible for the management of radiation protection or emergency planning at nuclear facilities. A number of grants will be allocated to persons from Central and Eastern Europe to attend this course.

The course will also provide general background to junior health physicists and other people whose prime responsibilities are not directly in this field, but are interested in a general review of its present trends.

Lectures will be given by staff of the SCK-CEN, the European Commission and other European organizations.
