The International Association of Science Parks (IASP) is holding its 14th World Conference on Science and Technology Parks in Trieste, Italy, from 16 to 19 June 1997.

The experience of the past two decades clearly shows that Science and Technology Parks are a powerful tool in fostering regional development and helping companies, especially SMEs, to become more competitive by adding value to their products and services through technology, innovation, management skills and international networking.

The IASP conference provides a forum in which experts from around the world can exchange information and examine the possibilities for the further development of the Science Park concept. Particular attention will be paid to the role of Science Parks as an effective instrument for growth in developing countries and for economies in transition.

As part of the conference programme, presentations will be given by various representatives of the European Commission, addressing:

- The regional and RTD innovation policies of the European Commission;
- European Union initiatives for innovation, dissemination and technology transfer;
- Closing the technology and knowledge gap: the European Union perspective.
