The Eighth International Conference on Harmful Algae will take place in Vigo, Spain, from 25-29 June 1997. The conference is being organized by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, in collaboration with the EU Reference Laboratory on Marine Biotoxins and the Galician Ministry of Fisheries, Shellfisheries and Aquaculture. It is supported by the European Commission within the framework of the Community's specific research programme in the field of Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT).

The conference will focus in particular on marine and freshwater microalgae, planktonic or benthic, and their toxicity and other harmful effects. Specific subject areas to be covered will include:

- Ecology and oceanography of harmful algae events;
- Taxonomy;
- Toxins;
- Management of toxic and harmful algae events;
- Pharmacological and epidemiological studies.

The conference will comprise keynote lectures, oral and poster presentations and round table discussions. It will also provide the occasion for the launch of the International Society for the Study of Harmful Algae.
