A European training course on the "Monitoring and measurements of lake recipients" will take place in Helsinki, Finland, from 25 to 29 August 1997. The course is part of a series being organized within the framework of the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT).

The aim of the course is to disseminate knowledge on the monitoring and measurement aspects of lake ecosystems. Theoretical and practical aspects relating to this field will be addressed. The topics to be covered will include:

- Hydrological and limnological features of different lake types;
- The choice and measurement of different lake types;
- Eutrophication and acidification of lakes;
- Harmful substances and compounds in lake ecosystems;
- Microbiological methods;
- Quality assessment procedures, intercalibration, standardization;
- Freshwater monitoring network for the area covered by the European Environment agency;
- Remote sensing;
- Water quality classification, water quality indices.

The course is aimed primarily at national water authorities, managers, professionals and technicians working in fields related to the management of water quality.
