A seminar on advanced coal winning techniques, entitled "A challenge for coal mining in Europe", will be held in Bonn, Germany, on 16 June 1997. The seminar is organized by the European Commission within the framework of support for coal research under the European Coal and Steel Community Treaty.

The aim of the seminar is to disseminate the results of research funded by the Community in the field of high-performance coal winning techniques. In addition to presentations of new techniques developed in the field, a representative of the Commission will outline the activities of the ECSC coal research programme. The seminar will include participation from representatives of the mining sector in Central and Eastern European countries, with a view to discussing common problems and exploring possibilities for technology transfer.
