A workshop on the protection of cultural heritage in the Mediterranean basin will be held in Cartage, Tunisia, from 10 to 14 June 1997. The event is organized by the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, with support from the European Commission, DG XII, under the INCO programme.

The aim of the workshop is to promote the application of experimental and technological sciences as well as socio-economic and archaeological know-how to the study of the problems of the heritage of monuments in the region. The event will be attended by participants from universities, research centres and private enterprises from both the EU and the Mediterranean partners.

The workshop will have the goals of identifying the reasons for degradation of monuments, analysing the technologies available to enable correct decisions to be taken during restoration, and proposing an effective policy for protecting monuments. In addition, the organizers wish to establish a Euro-Mediterranean network for the protection of the cultural heritage of monuments, which would act as a catalyst for future concrete RTD actions.
