A symposium on "Renewable bioproducts - Industrial outlets and research for the 21st century" will take place in Wageningen, The Netherlands, on 24-25 June 1997. The symposium is being organized jointly by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries and the Institute of Agrotechnological Research (ATO-DLO), and is supported by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of agriculture and fisheries (including agro-industry, food technologies, forestry, aquaculture and rural development) (FAIR).

The aim of the symposium will be to evaluate the current status of research into the non-food utilization of agricultural and biological raw materials. Particular emphasis will be placed on the implementation of this research in industrial markets. The meeting will also aim to assess the extent to which this field of research will require further support from the European Community, and will look at the role of renewables in future RTD Framework Programmes.

Participation in the symposium will be limited to a maximum of 250 invited participants, including representatives of relevant European industries, EU agricultural and research policy-makers, and selected scientific experts in the field. The programme will include lectures by industrial speakers on the potential uses of renewable raw materials in the chemical, plastics, pharmaceutical and fibre industries. Presentations by EU policy-makers, followed by a round table discussion with all parties concerned, are also foreseen.
