An international research workshop on the social shaping of technology will be held in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, on 27 and 28 June 1997. The workshop is organized by Edinburgh University, with the support of COST and the European Commission.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers and networks active in the field to explore the processes by which the new technical capabilities captured within multimedia are used within particular social settings. In particular, it will focus on the ways in which users are represented in the design of multimedia products and services, and how users adapt these offerings to their particular purposes, for example shaping and reshaping multimedia and its societal outcomes.
