Island Waste 2000, a conference on future waste management practice in European islands, will take place in the Orkney Islands, United Kingdom, from 10 to 13 September 1997. The conference is sponsored by the European Commission.

The objectives of the conference are to bring together those involved in waste management in island communities from around Europe to share experience and encourage the development of solutions in partnership. The conference will explore sustainable waste management solutions and plans and look at these in the context of EU and national waste management strategies and environmental policies. Furthermore, it will provide local decision-makers with practical tools to aid effective waste disposal, give authorities a better basis for understanding the essence of the waste management problem on islands and archipelagos and aid good practice in decisions on waste management systems.

The conference will also see the official launch of the European Commission's recently published "Codes of Practice for Island Waste Management". This manual has been developed on behalf of the Commission by consultants from different Member States, and provides policy-makers with the best possible solutions to waste management problems.
