Les Rencontres de Thessaloniki

"Les Rencontres de Thessaloniki" will take place on 31 October and 1 November 1997, in Thessaloniki, Greece, the European Cultural Capital for 1997.
The annual event is organized by "Les Rencontres", an association bringing together elected members of local and regional authorities responsible for culture from across Europe. The focus of the Thessaloniki meeting will be the problems of multicultural cities, and the place of culture and local authorities in the EU in the future.
In addition to the plenary sessions, three working groups will address:
- Cultural policies of regions and cities;
- Culture and young people;
- Small and medium-sized towns - Implementation of a cultural policy (definition, conception, objectives).
The meeting is supported by the Community's KALEIDOSCOPE programme, which also gives financial support to the annual European Cultural Capital.
