The World Congress on Railway Research, WCRR'97, will take place in Florence, Italy, from 16 to 19 November 1997. The theme of this latest edition of the WCRR will be "Optimizing costs and productivity while respecting the environment".

The Congress will provide an international forum in which experts from the railway sector, industry and the academic world can exchange information and experience, discuss technological innovations and define common strategies and goals for the future of rail transport. The topics to be covered by the Congress will include:

- Railway research: management and policy;
- Strategic R&D sectors:
- Economic aspects;
- Future visions related to technological development
- Railways and environment;
- Non-conventional guided transport systems.

Mr. Neil Kinnock, European Commissioner responsible for transport policy will deliver the keynote speech at a round table on the "Role of the railways in the third millenium: a key link in the transport chain?", to be held on 17 November 1997.
