An advanced study course on wildfire management will be held in Athens, Greece, from 6 to 14 October 1997. The course, sponsored by the Community's Environment and Climate specific RTD programme, is aimed at graduating, graduate or post-graduate students already involved in research in the field.

The course aims to keep forest fire researchers and fire managers informed of progress and state-of-the-art knowledge in the various aspects, topics and technologies of wildfire management. It will provide a training opportunity, at a European level, for the participating students and will disseminate research results within an educational frame.

The topics to be covered will include:

- Behaviour and modelling;
- Prevention planning;
- Suppression and management;
- Effects;
- Management technology.

The training programme will comprise lectures by top EU scientists in the field of forest fire research. Invited lectures by speakers from USA and Russia are also included in the programme. The course will be open to a maximum of 30 students, who will be selected by the Organizing Committee.
