Biotechnology ethics and public perceptions of biotechnology
The first week of the course will focus on ethics, the importance of ethics in biotechnology issues and the relation with regulatory issues such as patents, intellectual property rights and exploitation of foreign bio-resources. Case studies and discussions will focus on food, medicine, the environment and other fields. The second week will present and consider recent research in science communications related to biotechnology. It will cover the need for communication, the arguments and objections, the different target groups and the safety, regulatory, economic and ethical aspects. Major survey results on public opinions of biotechnology will be presented.
The course is aimed at PhD students, lecturers, post-doctoral fellows and company staff working in the field of biotechnology. It will take the form of an intensive, interactive workshop, with lectures given by academic biotechnologists and scientists from major European companies.
The course fee is ECU 1,000, with reductions possible for applicants from less-favoured regions or young researchers.
