The first MEDMOD workshop on Mediterranean Sea Modelling will take place in Villefranche, France, on 27-29 October 1997. The workshop, which is supported by the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of Marine Science and Technologies (MAST), is part of an initiative aimed at providing a regular forum for the exchange of information on work in progress and on recent achievements in Mediterranean Sea Modelling.

The MEDMOD initiative, based on the experience of the JONSMOD (Joint Numerical Sea Modelling) initiative over the past twenty years, intends to hold meetings every two years, at the same time (last week of October) and in the same place (Villefranche Marine Station). This first workshop will cover the following main topics:

- General circulation, data assimilation and operational modelling;
- Deep water formation;
- Ecosystem modelling;
- Trophic structure;
- Role of straits;
- Atmospheric forcing.
