An ACTS workshop entitled "Broadband access networks: Alternatives for competition" will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on 28 October 1997. The workshop is organized by DG XIII of the European Commission.

The workshop will examine the alternative technologies which are competing to offer access to broadband services in both the near future and the medium-term. Such technologies include ADSL, HFC, fibre, wireless (with or without mobility), satellite and other technologies. Their economics, evolution, capability and possible barriers for the smooth implementation of these technologies will be analysed during the workshop.

The programme will draw on work conducted within the ACTS programme, in particular within four areas:

- Broadband access convergence;
- Broadband access evolution and economics;
- Broadband access and mobility;
- Broadband access satellite.
