Labourtel '97, the second international conference on labour and telematics, will take place in Manchester, United Kingdom, from 17 to 19 October 1997. The conference is sponsored by the Trade Union and Social Affairs Unit of the European Commission, DG X/C-4, and the European Trade Union Congress (ETUC).

The aim of the event is to consider the impact of new information and communications technologies on trade union organization, international solidarity, workers' rights and the future of work in an Information Society. Speakers at the conference will include representatives of trade unions from around Europe, the ILO, workers' educational organizations, labour research and union campaign groups and the EU.

The main topics to be covered include:

- Globalization and the future of the trade union movement;
- Collective bargaining-information provision and exchange;
- Campaigning-cyber pickets and web site development;
- European and global perspectives of the Information Society;
- Information deficit: access and participation;
- Organization: recruitment, teleworking, gender in the workplace;
- Training skills and distance learning;
- Workers' rights and censorship;
- The technological future and the trade union response.
