A European conference on "Evaluation practice in the field of structural policies" will be held in Seville, Spain, on 16-17 March 1998. The conference, organized by DG XVI of the European Commission, in collaboration with DG V, DG VI and DG XIV, is the third and last conference under the MEANS (Methods for Evaluating Actions of a Structural Nature) programme.

The conference will be based on case studies of evaluations considered to be particularly useful. About twenty evaluation cases are expected to be presented. Particular attention will be given to analysis of the practice of intermediate evaluation to drawing conclusion in terms of improved management.

The organizers are presently calling for the submission of proposals for presentations. Papers should meet the following criteria:

- An evaluation in the context of the Structural Funds:
. Interventions aimed at one of the six Community objectives or initiatives;
. Intermediate but also ex-ante or ex-post evaluations;
. Evaluation of one or several programming documents or thematic evaluation;

- An evaluation considered to be useful and of a high quality:
. Completed or sufficiently advanced evaluation, or an evaluation project with new perspectives;
. Evaluation which meets the quality criteria of the MEANS programme;
. Favourable opinion of one or more users of the evaluation;
. Participation of at least one user in the presentation.

Proposals should describe, in 800 words, the exact nature of the evaluation to be presented and how this evaluation meets the above selection criteria. The deadline for the submission of papers is 19 September 1997.
