A conference entitled "Libraries in the third millennium" will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 24 and 25 September 1997. The conference is organized by the Belgian Communauté française.

The aim of the conference is to bring together librarians and documentalists for a series of presentations and demonstrations of the latest information and communications technologies in the library context. Presentations will cover topics such as the use of the Internet in libraries, the move from paper to CD-ROM and Internet, and experiences of individual libraries in digitizing catalogues and stock.

An official from DG XIII of the European Commission will outline the work undertaken within European Community programmes in the field, in particular the INFO2000 programme, which supports the development of multimedia, and the Libraries sector of the Telematics Applications programme.

In addition to the presentations, participants will be able to see applications of the new technologies at first hand in the exhibition area. Two workshops will also be organized to provide training in on-line products, for catalogues, and for reference sources.
