An international workshop on the "Ecological basis of livestock grazing in Mediterranean ecosystems" will be held in Thessaloniki, Greece, on 23-25 October 1997. The workshop is being organized by Aristotle University (Thessaloniki, Greece), with the support of the European Commission (Environment and Climate programme).

The workshop will examine the role of livestock husbandry in altering and shaping Mediterranean ecosystems and landscape, looking, in particular, at the ecological relationships between grazing and ecosystem components. The aim will be to work towards the formulation of a new policy on the ecological integration of livestock grazing into Mediterranean ecosystem conservation and management as part of an overall strategy for the prevention of desertification.
