A workshop on "Cooperative research in energy - Support for SMEs" will be held in Dublin, Ireland, on 8 October 1997. The workshop, organized by the Irish Energy Centre, in collaboration with the JOULE Focal Point Network and the organizers of the European Wind Energy Conference 1997 (EWEC'97), is aimed at informing SMEs of the funding opportunities still available under the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of non-nuclear energy (JOULE/THERMIE).

Although the final full call for proposals for RTD projects under JOULE has already been launched, SMEs may still benefit from financial support from the EU through the CRAFT or "Cooperative Research" awards.

Cooperative research, also known as CRAFT, is one of the "Technology Stimulation Measures for SMEs" introduced under the Fourth Framework Programme to promote the participation of SMEs in the Community's research programmes. It allows groups of low- and medium-tech SMEs facing similar problems or opportunities to out-source the required RTD work to a third party (e.g. university or research organization).

The basic requirement for a cooperative research project are for at least four eligible SMEs from two or more Member or Associated States to put forward a joint cooperative project in collaboration with a research/RTD performer. Proposals may be submitted at any time, but evaluations are carried out in batches, two or three times a year. The next target date for the submission of proposals under this scheme is 17 December 1997.

The workshop is aimed at helping Irish and other European SMEs to access this support opportunity. It will also coincide with EWEC'97, thus providing participants with the opportunity to meet with many of the foremost researchers and developers in the field of wind energy and in the wider renewable energy sector.
