This year's EPIDOS Annual Conference and Exhibition, dedicated to the theme of patent information, will take place in Lille, France, from 14 to 16 October 1997. The conference, which is organized by the European Patent Office, in cooperation this year with the French Patent Office (INPI), provides an annual meeting point for patent information users.

Patent information plays an essential role not only for developing technical expertise in Europe, but also for evaluating future research and development programmes and for guiding economic initiatives. Delegates from all over the world will be brought together at this conference to discuss the latest developments in the field.

The conference will be accompanied by a public exhibition at which visitors will be able to find out more about patents and patent information. Most of the world's major patent information suppliers will be represented. The French Patent Office, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the European Patent Office will be present, and hardware and software suppliers will advise visitors on the latest developments. In addition, several of the top patenting companies in France will be providing advice on how to get the most out of the patent system.

A series of public seminars will be held outside the context of the conference. These have been tailored to meet the needs of a broad spectrum of people who have previously had little or no contact with the patent system. The seminars will be divided into blocks, each aimed at a specific group:

- Management and decision-makers;
- Students and young graduates;
- Researchers and engineers.
