An international workshop on "Integrated systems for real time flood forecasting and warning" will be held in Padova, Italy, on 25 September 1997. The workshop is being organized as part of the RIBAMOD (River basin modelling, management and flood mitigation) project, a concerted action funded by the European Commission as part of the Environment and Climate research programme.

The aim of the workshop is to identify and discuss the research needs in the field of flood hazard from an operational point of view. The European Commission has supported research on flood hazard under several programmes. Real-time flood management has played an important role within this framework.

In recent years, substantial research work has been carried out on rainfall estimation (through remote sensing), hydrological modelling and flood warning systems but operational applications, combining modern (rainfall remote sensing) technology and advanced (hydrological applications) methodologies are not yet developed. Ways of improving the transfer of these technologies and methodologies, with the objective of mitigating the impact of floods at European level, will be discussed.

The main subject areas addressed by the workshop will be as follows:

- The integration of meteorological model forecasts into real-time flood forecasting systems;
- Remote sensed information assimilation within flood forecasting systems;
- Real-time flood management;
- Operational experience (with case studies from Italy, The Netherlands, the UK and Paraguay).

In addition, following the severe flooding experienced in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary this year, representatives from these countries have been invited to participate in the workshop. This is expected to provide a unique opportunity for the exchange of information and experiences and the development of common strategies for the future.

The workshop is part of a series of four international meetings scheduled as part of the RIBAMOD concerted action. The next and last event in the series will be a workshop on "Sustainable use of river catchments and climate change", due to be held in the UK on 26-27 February 1998.
