Promotion of multimedia in the European Union

An Information Day on support available for the development of technologies and tools for multimedia systems in Europe will be held in Stuttgart, Germany, on 7 October 1997. The Day is being organized by the Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum (Innovation Relay Centre), in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Information Technology Research Centre and the Baden-Wurttemberg Media and Film Company. It will focus on opportunities arising under the forthcoming ESPRIT call for proposals due to be launched on 16 September 1997.

Financial support of approximately DM 30 million will be made available, under this call, for projects in Domain 3 of the ESPRIT Work Programme - Multimedia Systems. This covers the following main areas:

- Multimedia technology (Area 1);
- Multimedia objects trading and intellectual property rights management (Area 2);
- Multimedia systems pilots (Activity 1);
- Multimedia support networks (Activity 2).

In addition, other thematic areas relating to multimedia will be covered by this call. These areas, which have been allocated a budget of some DM 50 million, are:

- Information access and interfaces;
- IT for learning and training in industry.

The Information Day will provide an overview of the ESPRIT work programme in these areas and offer assistance in the preparation of project proposals. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the EU, successful project leaders and experienced experts in the field.
