A EUREKA Brokerage Event focusing on "New technologies for the metallurgy industry" will take place in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on 16-17 October 1997. The event - the Northern Moravian and Silesian Partnering Days - is being organized by the Czech EUREKA Office, the Association of Business Innovation of the Czech Republic and the Business Innovation Centre in Ostrava, in close cooperation with the EUREKA Offices from Poland and Austria, and the BIT-Secretariat for Central and Eastern Europe in Austria. It is also supported by the European Commission (DG IA).

The region of Northern Moravia and Silesia covers the north-eastern part of the Czech Republic along the borders with Poland and the Slovak Republic, as well as the southern part of Poland. Traditionally, this region has been a very important industrial centre in Europe. The most significant sectors of its economy are the steel industry, coal mining and energy production. Other important economic sectors include engineering and the production of chemicals.

The Brokerage Event is aimed primarily at creating opportunities for the revitalization of this region. The main goals are to establish new international links with industrialists and researchers from other European regions, to stimulate innovative market-oriented R&D cooperation, and to encourage European industrialists and researchers to work together on innovative technological projects.

This event will focus on the initiation of joint international R&D projects with a clear market orientation. Participants will be offered a balanced programme of presentations, workshops, poster facilities and individual meeting possibilities.

During the plenary sessions, participants will be given an overview of EUREKA, its goals and mechanisms, as well as funding possibilities and basic information on other forms of international cooperation.

Tailor-made thematic workshops will address the following main areas:

- New technologies in metallurgical processes (for the production of any kind of metal, such as iron, copper, aluminium, steel, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, etc.);
- Advanced technologies for metallurgical machinery and products (such as design, production, exploitation, Total Quality management, etc.);
- Innovation in environmental protection.
